Dr. Gonzo will get by with a little help from his friend, Dak Rakow, when they perform at Mason City Limits Comedy Club this weekend. Rakow has performed on HBO’s Comic Relief II…Comic Strip Live on Fox and MSNBC’s Heatliners & Legends with Matt Lauer. The two comedians have known each other for a couple decades.
Gonzo, who Mason City knows as John Means, toured nationally in the 80’s and 90’s opening for bands like Jefferson Starship, Huey Lewis and the News and Night Ranger and later on his own at the comedy clubs across the country. He moved back to his home town of Mason City in the early 90’s after 14 years in the San Fransisco area.
Rakow’s comedy career began after he returned to Cleveland after a divorce in the late 70’s. “I moved back to Cleveland and struck up a conversation with four guys in a pizza parlor,” Rakow said. “At the end of the conversation one of the guys asked if I had ever been to the Cleveland Comedy Club. He introduced himself and his friend as owners of the club and the other two guys were the comedians that week. Their names were Gary Shandling and Bob Saget,” recalls Rakow.
